How to set up OpenDNS or Google DNS on Windows Vista
Vista uses the Network and Sharing Center to assign custom DNS servers.
Why change DNS on Vista?
Public DNS bypasses ISP resolvers that may no longer be maintained well for legacy connections.
Recommended public DNS servers
- OpenDNS (Cisco): 208.67.222.222 / 208.67.220.220
- Google Public DNS: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4
- Cloudflare DNS: 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1
Steps for Windows Vista
- Open Control Panel → Network and Internet → Network and Sharing Center.
- Click Manage network connections (or View status → Properties).
- Right-click your active connection → Properties. Approve UAC if prompted.
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) → Properties.
- Choose Use the following DNS server addresses and enter OpenDNS or Google IPs.
- Click OK to apply.
Flush DNS on Vista
Administrator Command Prompt is required.
ipconfig /flushdns
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run ipconfig /flushdns.
- Restart the browser and test the site.
Verify it worked
Compare access on Vista with a phone on mobile data. If only Vista fails, DNS or local malware/firewall rules may still be involved.
